Explanation

A Summer’s Winter

VOCES8 (“the discovery of the 2017 Choral Biennale”) continues its residence with this wonderful cross-disciplinary project in which choral music, contemporary dance and the majestic spaces of the Bavo Church combine. If you’ve heard the pristine sound of VOCES8, especially their exquisite best-selling album WINTER, then you’ll know what to expect. Does ensemble vocal singing get any better than this?

It’s the repertoire from this recording which inspired two young Rotterdam choreographers to create a full-length, spatial piece with no less than 27 dancers from the Codarts Dance Academy for the entire length of the Bavo Church. The artistic team premiered  A Summer’s Winterearlier this year, but in the knowledge that a new version of the production would be one of the highlights of our 2019 Choral Biennale. Barnaby Smith, countertenor and artistic director of VOCES8:  “It was a new step for us to work with dancers. So interesting to see a visual and physical interpretationof our music. The first version of this production was a knock-out for us. We’re really really looking forward to doing it again, but this time in the space for which it was really created!”

Other possibilities to admire VOCES8 are:
-       4 July during the Heavenly Hour in the Nieuwe Kerk
-       6 July during the master class for amateur singers*
* This masterclass is fully booked.
