Start ticket sales 10th Choral Biennale

With special attention to young talent and surprising cross-over concerts

Today, tickets for the first concerts of the 10th International Koorbiënnale Haarlem & Amsterdam will go on sale. Apart from looking back on previous editions of this festival, the anniversary edition also wants to put the spotlight on the future and on the new generation of ensemble singers. Another feature this year are the many unique crossover productions: from a mix of choir music and contemporary dance to a musical meeting between gospel and baroque.

Twenty years ago, the Koorbiënnale started off as a small festival for vocal ensemble music enthusiasts and gradually grew into a high-end, ten-day international festival that shows the diversity and timeliness of choral music. Its 10thedition will take place from Friday 28 June to Sunday 7 July 2019 from various locations such as the theatre and concert hall Philharmonie and the St. Bavo Church in Haarlem, and Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam.

For the opening concert at the Philharmonie on 28 June, three prominent ensembles will give old pieces of music a new life. Cappella Amsterdam creates new arrangements of works by composer Orlando di Lasso, whose music was already performed at the very first Koorbiënnale. The Nationaal Gemengd Koor (National Mixed Choir), requested to return after its impressive debut performance during the previous edition, shall perform Mozart’s timeless Requiem, together with the Residentie Orkest (Residence Orchestra) and four young soloists, whose names will be announced later. Conductor Gabriella Teychenné, about this exceptional collaboration: “I think that the interplay between the young singers and the renowned orchestra will come out beautifully in this performance.”

Voces8 was the most incredible discovery of the 2017 Koorbiënnale. This edition, the singers return and their flawless voices will fill the St. Bavo Cathedral. The British ensemble sings musical pieces from the album Winter, partly with instrumental accompaniment (strings and harp) and graced by 29 young dancers from Codarts Rotterdam, who will use the space for a choreography that fits seamlessly with the music. In addition to this performance, Voces8 can be heard during one of the famous “Hemelse uurtjes” (Heavenly Hours). For this concert, the company has been given carte blanche to perform their favourite works.

Never before was the famous Holland Baroque ensemble involved with the festival, although the Koorbiënnale had this wish for a long time. Now, the time has finally come, and it will be truly sensational. According to Holland Baroque, baroque is everywhere, even in gospel. To show you exactly how, they are going to join forces with the London Community Gospel Choir, which has previously performed with superstars such as George Michael, Liza Minnelli, and Madonna. The result is a concert in which a baroque orchestra and a gospel choir create an incredible musical spectacle.
