Escape from the everyday humdrum
Inspired by the English Evensong (a church service held in the late afternoon) the audience is offered an alternative to the everyday humdrum. A brief escape from the Saturday stress of grocery shopping or doing chores that you didn’t get around to during the week. Instead there’s time for timeless songs about love, freedom and hope by ‘rising star’ the Damask Vocal Quartet at the Great or St. Bavo Church. The young quartet (founded in 2014) is committed to small-scale quartet music and lets this genre bloom freely through the music of Schoenberg, Ned Rorem, Milhaud, and spirituals. The audience is taken along for the ride and will discover the space of the Bavo Church in a brand new way.
The Damask Vocal Quartet is one of the central ensembles in this year’s Choral Biennale and will also take on a teaching role during the Day of the Quartets.
Concert without intermission.
