Mysterious song and dance in an enchanting church
The Latvian Radio Chamber Singers are part of the renowned Latvian Radio Choir, which experts and fans consider to be one of the best chamber choirs in the world. Conductor Kaspars Putniņš founded the ensemble in 1994 to explore the various possibilities that the voice has to offer, as well as new forms of presentation.
The concert in the Great or St. Bavo Church – led by his colleague Sigvards Klava - gives the Latvians ample opportunity to embark on this adventurous mission. The audience is seated in the church, but doesn’t look out onto a fixed stage. The ensemble explores and conquers the majestic church in various configurations. On multiple occasions two dancers, including “contact improvisation” star Maurice Causey (formerly Nederlands Dans Theater), improvise to the music that is played. This music includes Kaija Saariaho’s Tag des Jahres, a mysterious, chillingly beautiful work for voices and tape set to poems by Hölderlin that she dedicated to her mother. In 2016 the Finnish composer became a familiar name to the general Dutch audience through her opera Only the Sound Remains, staged by Peter Sellars.
